There are many age-related changes that can have a significant effect on how drugs work in the senior patient such as:
1. Multiple Chronic Diseases- 80% of seniors have at least one chronic disease, and many of them have multiple diseases.
2. Multiple medications - (Polypharmacy): On average, seniors take as many as 3x the medications as younger patients, therefore increasing the potential for adverse drug events.
3. Increased Side Effects: Seniors experience side
effects at a rate of 2-3 times greater than that of the younger adult. This increased risk is due to changes in kidney and liver which will ultimately affect how medications work in the body.
